How to Inspect your Oil

If you own a vehicle, it is important for you to take care of it. That means paying attention to your oil. You need to inspect your oil from time to time to make sure that you still have enough oil in the tank. Your oil is important for reducing friction between the individual components of your engine, which can prevent it from overheating. Your oil is also critical for improving your gas efficiency. What do you need to do if you would like to inspect your oil? If you have questions about your car's oil, the team from Sport Cadillac would be happy to help you.

1. Make Sure Your Car Is Safe

First, you need to make sure that your car is safe. That means you should make sure it is parked. If you want to get accurate results, you need to make sure that your car is on level ground. You should also make sure that the engine has been turned off and that the emergency brake has been installed. If you are curious about where the emergency brake is located, you may want to take a look at the manual.

2. Pull Out the Dipstick

Next, you need to get the dipstick, which you will use to check the oil level. The vast majority of vehicles have a hood release lever located near the instrument panel, but there is also a chance that there is a safety release underneath your hood. You will need to release the hood before you can open it.

Once you open the hood, you can pull out the dipstick. It may have a yellow or orange handle, making it easy to find. You might also see an oil-can symbol near the dipstick, which will tell you you have found the right device.

3. Have a Rag or Towel Ready

You will need to pull a dipstick out of the tube that it has been housed in. There might be some debris located on the dipstick itself, so you should wipe off any contaminants or debris that might get in your way. You should see 2 lines on the dipstick. Make sure you can see them clearly. The first line denotes a low oil level, and the second line indicates that the tank is full.

4. Check the Oil Level

Now, it is time to check the oil level in your vehicle. You will need to insert the dipstick into the tube slowly. Make sure that you push it all the way to the bottom. Allow it to sit there for a second, and then go ahead and pull the dipstick out. When you check the oil level, you must make sure that you insert the dipstick evenly into the tank. Take a look at where the oil has marked the dipstick. Is it close to the low oil line? Or, is it close to the full line? This will let you know how much oil you have in the tank.

5. Put the Dipstick Away

Now that you know how much oil is in your car, it is time to clean up. Use the paper towel or rag to clean the dipstick once again. Then, return it to the housing in the hood. You should make sure the oil tank has been closed securely, and then put down the hood.
