About Sport Cadillac
For more than 75 years, Sport Automotive has grown alongside communities such as Silver Spring, Beltsville, and Gambrills, Maryland. What began as a single Chevrolet dealership in Northwest D.C. has evolved into a family-owned automotive organization representing multiple brands, including the luxury experience that awaits in a Cadillac.
At the center of that story is a simple idea: build a business that can grow with its community while remaining connected to the people who make it home.
The Beginning of a Family Automotive Legacy
That story began in 1950, when Robert Fulton Hicks opened Hicks Chevrolet at 5929 Georgia Avenue in Northwest D.C. Robert, known as “Bob,” had started his career with General Motors, establishing a foundation in the automotive business that would become a family tradition. In 1952, he passed the dealership to his son-in-law, George Fogarty, who had also begun his career with General Motors.
During a trip to California, George saw the emerging concept of suburban automotive parks and recognized the potential to bring that model to the Washington, D.C., area. That vision helped lead the business to Silver Spring in 1968, where the dealership took on the Sport name.
George was also instrumental in developing what became the Montgomery Auto Sales Park, creating a destination where multiple automotive businesses could serve drivers throughout the region. More than five decades later, that connection to Silver Spring remains an important part of the Sport Automotive identity.
A Family Legacy Built to Evolve
The move to Silver Spring was only the beginning of Sport Automotive's growth. Under George's leadership, the organization expanded its presence across the automotive industry, with ownership interests in dealerships stretching from Buffalo, New York, to Orlando, Florida.
George's son, Robert Hicks Fogarty Sr., continued that legacy. After college, Robert Sr. began his automotive career at one of the family's dealerships in Orlando before returning to the Washington, D.C., area to work alongside his father. He became President of the Sport organization in 1984 and assumed full ownership following his father's passing in 1989.
Over the following decades, Robert Sr. guided the business through an evolving automotive landscape. The next generation soon joined the business. Robert Jr. began working at the dealership in 2007, followed by his younger brother Gibbs in 2009.
Bringing Cadillac to the Sport Automotive Family
In 2020, Robert Fogarty Sr. retired and sold the dealerships to his sons, Robert Jr. and Gibbs, marking another transition in the family's long history in the automotive business.
That same year brought an important new chapter: Robert and Gibbs completed the purchase of Capitol Cadillac and moved the Cadillac franchise to Automobile Boulevard in Silver Spring, bringing the luxury brand to the same location that had long been home to the family's Chevrolet operation.
The addition of Cadillac brought together decades of family automotive experience with a brand known for American luxury, distinctive design, advanced technology and an unmistakable presence on the road.
Today, Sport Cadillac carries that legacy forward from its Silver Spring location, serving drivers throughout Montgomery County and the greater Washington, D.C., area.
Part of the Silver Spring Community
Being a family-owned dealership means being invested in more than the automotive business. For generations, Sport Automotive has supported the people and organizations that make the Silver Spring and greater Washington, D.C., community a place to call home.
That involvement takes many forms. Sport Automotive has supported local schools such as Rosemary Hills School and Paint Branch, while also contributing to organizations focused on families, health and community development. Partnerships with Habitat for Humanity, Children's Hospital and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society reflect a commitment to supporting people throughout the region, while involvement with organizations such as Winners Lacrosse, Corrigan Sports and the Tewaaraton Award reflects the importance of athletics and community connections.
These relationships are part of the business's identity, not simply an extension of it. Customers aren't just visitors to a showroom. They're neighbors, families, businesses and members of the same communities that Sport Automotive has served for generations.
